Three super simple steps to reduce waste in your kitchen
We know that terms like eco-friendly, good for the environment, and sustainable may turn some people off. You might be thinking things like, “I don’t have time for that,” “I don’t care about that,” or, “that sounds too hard.” That’s why we’re here. We want to make taking caring of the planet as easy as possible, and trust us, it is MUCH easier than it sounds! We have done all the heavy lifting and research so you don’t have to. Here are three super simple, high quality products you can get for your kitchen that are safer for you, kinder to the planet, and better for your wallet!
This spray bottle. I got this tip from @foodswithjudes who is a wonderful person to follow for cleaner and healthier eating. Pam and some other aerosol-type oils you may be using contain nasty ingredients. Like, we’re talking the same ingredients you find in paint. Not to mention they can be hazardous to the workers in the recycling process if not emptied properly. Although I wish the spray part of the bottle wasn’t made of plastic, I am glad that the part that holds the oil is made of glass. That way it will last a lifetime and can be put in the dishwasher. By refilling it with my own oil, I don’t have to worry about any harmful additives in there. I have two: one for canola oil that I use for baking; and one for olive oil that I use for vegetables, eggs, meat, etc. I know others use one for high-heat oil and one for low-heat oil. Get what you know you’ll use. Just refill when you run out!
2. Glass food containers. Tired of terrible plastic food containers? Sauce stains, lingering smells, lids not fitting anymore… sound familiar? Your plastic containers also contain toxins like BPA that leach into your food, harming your health (side note - never microwave plastic, more on that another day). You don’t have to worry about any of that with glass! If you already have some, great! Keep using them. If not, we love these. They are completely dishwasher, microwave, and oven safe (except the lids). They make reheating leftovers SO EASY! We love the bamboo lids that double as cutting boards. You can rest assured that these are nontoxic and will last forever!
3. Reusable baggies. I have tried three different brands of reusable baggies and these are by far the best! They are dishwasher safe, leak proof, and easy to open and close. We both have had ours for several years and they look just as nice as when we first got them. Perfect for anyone who is on the go, and those looking for a place to store their leftover pancakes :). And just imagine… you never have to buy ziplocks again!
